Caption: Children
playing tug of war, Fisheating Creek, Florida USA
Technical data: Photo taken with handheld Olympus SLR film camera and
Zuiko 180mm f2.8 lens using existing daylight. Approximate exposure
1/1000 second at f8 - Kodak T-Max 400 black & white film, processed
normally. No lens filters were used.
Film was scanned using a Nikon
Coolscan series film scanner. Photo file was routinely optimized using
Photoshop; levels and curves, sharpening, cropping and dust spot
removal using clone tool. I use a Mac for all photo processing.

Comments: When children are this engaged making good candid
photos is about as easy as chewing gum. This photo was taken late in
the day at a campground full of families and their children.
Campgrounds are very good locations for candid children photos though
the politics can be tricky. Never ask permission from the campground
management; they've got nothing to gain and lots to lose by granting
it. Rather, stroll around and casually ask individuals for permission
to "take a picture". Of course, always always ask children's
parents for permission.
The man straining mightily on the
far left is very prominent in this photo. If you want to draw attention
to something in a picture, place it on an edge, like this.
