Caption: Pre-teen
boy wearing a winter hat.
Technical data: Photo taken with an Olympus digital SLR camera and
Zuiko 14-54mm f2.8-3.5 lens; hand held, available light with auto
fill-flash, some minus flash exposure adjustment because of the dark
background. Approximate exposure in manual mode 1/60 second at f8.0 -
ISO 200, WB manually set to 5600. No lens filters were used.
Photo file was routinely optimized
using Photoshop; levels and curves, color balance, sharpening and
cropping. I use a Mac for all photo processing.

Comments: While photographing
several pre-teen boys near a shopping mall I decided to skip the
usual cliched poses and simply make portraits. The problem was, where
could I find a good, plain background - and fast? Pre-teens have a low
tolerance for boredom. There was too much hot sun to use the sides of
buildings and the lots and alleys were too cluttered. I spotted a high
dense hedge of foliage near some air conditioning units and used it for
background, but not without a few problems.
The foliage was mottling and
discoloring the skin tones so I used a little fill-flash to correct the
color and smooth out the tones. The dark foliage was also confusing the
flash into firing too much light (it's meter reads the darkness and
overcompensates by sending too much light). I dialed down the flash
output about two stops to make up for it.
