Technical Data Photo taken with a Nikon SLR film camera and Nikkor 85mm f1.8 lens; hand held, available light. Approximate exposure 1/250 second at f4 - Kodak E-200 color transparency exposed at EI 400, push processed. No lens filters were used. Film was scanned using a Minolta Dimage series film scanner. Photo file was routinely optimized using Photoshop; levels and curves, color balance, sharpening, cropping and dust spot removal using clone tool. I use a Mac for all photo processing.
Comments I wanted a soft dreamy look for this teen photo but also a distinctive focal point of interest. I decided to emphasize only the right side of her face and to throw everything else out-of-focus. First, by using a wide f4 aperture and moving in close I was able to reduce the depth of field (area of apparent sharp focus). Then, by focusing precisely on her right eye, I was able to keep only that eye and her nose and mouth in focus, softening everything else for the contemplative pose I needed. This photo also shows why black is the most important color in a photograph.
