Technical data: Hand held Olympus SLR film camera, manual exposure mode, Zuiko 85mm f2 lens, in camera TTL spot metering, using existing daylight from large window. Approximate exposure 1/125 second at f8 on Kodak T-Max 400 black and white film rated at EI 800 and processed normally. No lens filters were used. Film was scanned using a Nikon Coolscan series film scanner. Photo file was routinely optimized with Photoshop on a Mac.

Comments: I made this picture quickly in a high school stairwell while these two hispanic teens were walking to their next class. The soft light was from a large north facing window. I needed quite a large "depth of field" (zone of apparent sharp focus in front of and behind the actual point of focus) - more depth of field discussion here - so I used f8 and exposed the film at twice its rated exposure index (IE) to get a high enough shutter speed. A short telephoto lens, or the equivalent setting on a zoom lens, is a good choice for this type of head and shoulders photograph.  HC
