Technical data: Photo taken with hand held Nikon SLR film camera in manual exposure mode and Nikkor 85mm f1.8 lens using existing daylight & fill-flash. Approximate exposure 1/250 second at f8 - Kodak T-Max 100 rated normally. No lens filters were used. Film was scanned using a Nikon Coolscan series film scanner. Photo file was routinely optimized with Photoshop on a Mac.

Comments: This photo was made during a series of father and son photo sessions. I had only five minutes to conceive and make this shot; the father needed to leave unexpectedly and I had just arrived with nothing prepared as well. We rushed out to the backyard and made a few quick portraits, then I spotted the lawnmower.

By using a slightly elevated camera position I was able to use the grass as an uncluttered background but didn't use quite enough fill-flash. This shot called for one-half stop more flash but a little tweaking with Photoshop did the trick.  HC
