Comments: This photo was taken outdoors on the shaded steps of a school using a plain stucco wall as background. I used a small fast-handling SLR to keep up with the procession of children who lined up for a "quick" picture. I was able to make perhaps three dozen portraits on this spot in less than an hour's time thanks to a fast and familiar camera, a carefully chosen location and pre-arranged camera exposure info.
African American skin needs quite a bit less exposure than a simple spot or center weighted meter reading would suggest. To get the right exposure just spot meter the skin and give 1 to 1 1/2 stops less exposure than indicated. Or take an ambient light reading with a hand-held meter; no adjustment required. HC
