Technical data: Photo taken with an Olympus SLR film camera and Zuiko 100mm f2.8 lens, manual camera exposure mode, spot metering in-camera. Approximate exposure 1/500 second at f11 with Kodak T-Max 400 film exposed at EI 400 and processed normally. No lens filters were used. Film was scanned using a Nikon Coolscan series film scanner. Photo file was routinely optimized with Photoshop on a Mac; shadows opened up, and highlights tamped down with Image > Adjustments > Shadow/Highlight tool.

Comments: This was really a grab shot taken at the end of a day's filming. I'd been photographing the young boy for several hours. Finally his grandfather came by to escort him home. I was packing up my gear when I noticed this scene and quickly dropped to one knee and snapped this photo with whatever camera I could grab.

The subjects are strongly backlit and my hurried exposure was a little under, both factors that caused the subject's backsides to lack detail. Also, the bright sky background was somewhat featureless. Both of these problems were mitigated nicely with Photoshop's shadow / highlight tool found at Image > Adjustments > Shadow/Highlight. HC
