Technical data: Photo taken with an Olympus digital SLR camera and Zuiko 14-54mm f2.8-3.5 lens; hand held, available light with auto fill-flash, small plus flash exposure adjustment. Approximate exposure in manual mode 1/250 second at f8.0 - ISO 100, WB manually set to 5600. No lens filters were used. Film was scanned using a Minolta Dimage series film scanner. Photo file was routinely optimized with Photoshop on a Mac.

Comments: This was a straight forward photo taken after a soccer championship. Bright overhead sun was causing facial shadows so fill-flash was a must. After manually metering off the grass I turned on the flash and added about 2/3 of a stop of "plus" flash compensation because of the overly bright background. Bright backgrounds can fool the flash into underexposing somewhat.

When making fill-flash photos on-the-fly without time for careful measuring I usually take my best guess with flash compensation, make a few pictures, then make a few more using no compensation. That usually yields at least one or two photos I can live with.  HC
