Comments: This woman had early stage Alzeimer's disease. I wanted a picture that both signaled her disease and explained that her husband was her partner and caretaker, but didn't shout it too loudly. We tried many poses and locations but I later rejected most of the photographs because they looked totally contrived. As I was about to leave I asked for one last picture, a snapshot, and got this unguarded photo - either because of the woman's fatigue, or my asking for "just" a snapshot. It's often a good idea to change up the psychology of the picture taking. Sometimes to relieve the pressure I'll simply ask for a snapshot or, if things aren't working at all, I'll ask for really goofy or absurd poses to break the spell. Lighthearted is always easier than serious. HC
