Technical data: Photo taken with a Nikon SLR film camera and Nikkor 85mm f1.8 lens; hand held, available light. Approximate exposure 1/500 second at f8 - Kodak T-Max 400 black and white film rated and processed normally. No lens filters were used. Film was scanned using a Nikon Coolscan series film scanner. Photo file was routinely optimized with Photoshop on a Mac.

Comments: After finishing the photo session our group was entering a restaurant when this young girl quickly climbed onto her father's shoulder to sneak a peek.

Usually I have my cameras in manual exposure mode so I habitually adjust their exposure settings to changing conditions, whether I'm planning a picture or not. Naturally this makes it easier to act fast, but also, by constantly evaluating and setting the camera exposure I stay more engaged with my surroundings and much more likely to anticipate a picture.  HC
