Comments: This couple was seated in the shade of an outdoor gazebo with some good light flowing onto their faces from an open field - but not enough light to match the very bright background. I decided to overexpose the harsh, bright background a little to lessen the distraction but I still needed more light on the subjects. Some simple fill-flash was the quick and easy solution.
Using an SLR film camera in manual mode and an off-camera flash I set the camera exposure to overexpose the background by 2 stops and the flash unit to TTL Auto mode so it would "match" the camera exposure. Then I added a +1 stop adjustment to the flash to compensate for the bright background's effect on the flash - a bright backlight will sometimes cause the flash to underexpose it's intended subject. This kept the skin tones exposed properly but blew out the background enough so it wasn't too distracting. HC
